Client background and aspirations.

funky ladyJenny had a problem. She was an executive with a large advertising agency with a team that was hemorrhaging. Whether by bad luck or bad management, too many members of her team were leaving.

When she stepped back and looked at the situation, she initially decided it was not her fault. Some of them had been headhunted by other firms.

Jenny saw this as a compliment. After all, she had skilled them up and turned them into a valuable commodity. Others had asked for internal transfers. This was a little more unsettling for Jenny. After all, why would they want to leave the most dynamic team in the business?

Following a little soul searching, Jenny concluded that they had just not been able to cut it in the premier team and decided to move on. It could not be bad management, just bad luck.

They were rapidly losing motivation and the quality of their work was falling away. To make matters worse, they felt that Jenny should fix this and a hold on hiring new people meant this situation was not likely to change soon.

All this pressure saw Jenny start to fray around the edges. She was becoming increasing irritated with her team member's complaints and was hearing rumblings that more people were thinking of leaving.

She was also having problems at home with her partner and was working weekends and frequently waking up in the middle of the night in a sweat.

Despite her best intentions, it seems she was unable to divorce her problems at work with her home life. She had even found that she had cancelled her upcoming holiday with her partner – a situation he was none too happy about.

After an argument with her partner as she was leaving for work, she sat in the car and decided she could not do this by herself. She needed help and when she got to work, she called a friend in her business network that suggested she called PriorityOne and she did!

The Coaching Approach

The initial conversation with her Priority One Coach was an informal one-hour conversation in her favourite coffee shop.

She immediately felt more relaxed as the conversation began and together they identified which aspects of the Optimal Performance Model required more emphasis in the short and medium term.

Jenny agreed the key focus for her in the short term was gaining a sense of perspective for herself and resolving some of the immediate resource issues – The Working Environment and Personal Wellness aspects.

Jenny was provided with an Executive Coach who explored with her the impact she was having on the situation.

Jenny started to realise that in many ways she was fuelling the staff turnover and agreed to do some leadership coaching with a view to enhancing her leadership skills.

Jenny's Executive Coach worked with her in the medium-term to develop strategies to give herself more balance between her home and work life and develop her leadership and influencing skills.

Jenny resolved her short term staffing issues, get her personal life back on track, specifically reducing her stress levels.  This created more mental and physical energy to manage herself better day by day by organising:

·         Temporary resources to help in the office with the assistance of HR and some outside agencies;

·         A personal wellness program inclusive of

o        Full health checks,

o        Provision of a personal trainer to help her develop a personal wellness plan,

o        Engagement of the Massage Therapist for once a week relaxation treatments and;

o        A vacation with her partner, which focused on reducing their stress levels and how to enjoy quality time together.

The Results

Six months after her initial contact with PriorityOne Jenny was far happier and more productive.

She had learnt that the standards she was previously setting were helping people grow but also placing enormous pressure on them to the point where many of them left.

She developed her style and is now far more appreciative of what people can achieve with her support and encouragement. She had also learnt how to get a better balance between her work and personal time.

Sure, she still worked hard but she had learnt to keep her work in perspective and her relationship with her partner was again blossoming.
